a little something for the teachers

Just a few cards I've been working on for teacher gifts.

etsy front page!

A new friend on etsy alerted me to some breaking news over the weekend - gracie girl notes was featured on the front page! I was busy attending a wedding and totally missed it but thanks to craftcult.com's "vault" I was able to get a screen shot of it. So fun!

scallops, anyone?

I don't know much about graphic design or computers. My earliest memory of my computer illiteracy is from an internship I did in New York during the summer in between my junior and senior years in college. I was a copy intern at a small creative advertising agency. On my first day I was told to come up with tag lines for an over the top photo advertisement for BMW. I sat down at a mac and started typing. When I was finished I was supposed to save my work to a disk and then take it somewhere else to print. I found a blank disk and tried (without any success) to insert it into the computer. An irritated, apparently tech-savy, junior copywriter snatched it out of my hands (while he was on a very important phone call procuring rangers tickets) flipped it over and inserted it in the machine.

Many years later I still don't know much about computers or graphic design (take a look at most of my invites - they have very little printed design- hence the embellishments). I have fumbled my way through word, photoshop elements and printing press extreme and have somehow figured out along the way that if I just keep at something it usually comes together. Desperation also helps too.

The scalloped border on these cards took a lot of trial and error to figure out. The secret? Some sort of overprint margin that I can adjust in the printing menu -not in the layout of the cards. Wonderful, whimsical, evenly-spaced borders - that only took like 10 years to master.

grosgrain ribbon?

I love how these invites look with chocolate brown, grosgrain ribbon. Trying to decide if customers will be willing to add them themselves? The ribbon would be cut and ready to be attached - it's very simple. I think they really add something to the card but I just don't know if people will want to add them.

limited edition

These are some new, limited edition, spring time notes. What does "limited addition" mean - it means they take forever to make so I'm not going to make a whole lot of them. I just needed something fresh and spring-like on this freezing, rainy march day.

photography learning curve

I know that good product photography is a must but I just don't feel like I know enough about it. I really just experiment with different backgrounds, lighting, different times of day and different kinds of days (I've found that semi-cloudy days seem to be good). Some days I feel like some sort of light box or light tent may be the answer - who knows.

party time

The new clover envelopes from Paper Source are proving to be very inspirational. I've been wanting to bring back my party hat invite but couldn't find any paper I liked enough. There is so much more fun paper out there for girls. I finally came across this boyish polka dot paper and paired it with the clover envelopes. The font is new too - Famer's Market- from myfonts.com. I really like how they turned out. I wonder when my obsession with reycycled kraft paper will finally come to an end?
